St. John's kicks off 2013 regular season action with a tough Midwest road trip

While Minnesota’s wintry conditions may make it hard to think about spring, lacrosse seasons across the country are underway.  Anxious to begin regular season play, St. John’s heads on an action-packed road trip this week in which the Johnnies will play five games and one scrimmage in a four day span.

St. John’s starts its season and weekend with a game against Lindenwood University-Belleville on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at Lindenwood Stadium in Belleville, Ill.

“Lindenwood is a newer program but they’ve scheduled a tough season this year,” St. John’s coach Derek Daehn said. “I definitely admire their efforts to develop their program and it should be a great game for both teams to start their season.”

Following the game in Illinois, the Johnnies will quickly be back on the road and Kansas-bound.

Two opponents await St. John’s on Friday, Feb. 22 at Cadet Park / CBC in St. Louis, Mo. -- Missouri State University at 10 a.m. and MCLA DII No. 23-ranked Missouri Baptist University at 2 p.m.  Missouri State received 24 votes in the latest MCLA DII poll.

The Johnnies then head to Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo.  Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kan. (UPDATED) to face MCLA DII No. 15-ranked Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.

“The (Washington University-St. Louis) Bears were the winners of the GRLC last season and currently ranked in MCLA DII poll,” Daehn said. “They will definitely give us a good game.”

Capping off the weekend, the Johnnies will take on the University of Northern Colorado at Rockhurst High School also at Shawnee Mission East High School (UPDATED) on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. as well as the University of Kansas (MCLA DI) in a scrimmage at 1 p.m.

“We have a lot of games during the weekend but we’re excited to get the season going,” Daehn said. “We’re going to rely heavily on our bench and depth but with the hard work I’ve seen in practice and preseason scrimmages I’m confident in our team’s ability to make this weekend a successful one.

“We’re ready to go.”

After the weekend’s five games and one scrimmage, St. John’s will not have a regular season game until Friday, March 22 when the Johnnies take on No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State University, the 2012 National Championship runner-up, at Techny Prairie and Fields in Northbrook, Ill.
