COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – In compliance with pandemic regulations, Saint John's Lacrosse has released a revised schedule comprising of three Minnesota-based teams.
"We have received protocols and guidelines for the upcoming season," head coach Derek Daehn said. "We have a solid foundation but are still actively trying to find local in-state opponents.
"We just want to play lacrosse."
Currently, the team is restricted from traveling out of state as well as playing any programs from out of state. While the initial schedule was around 15 teams and games, the new schedule is comprised of eight games against three local teams.
"While we would love to have as many games as possible, the decision to play Minnesota-based teams is to minimize the risk of a COVID outbreak within the team and our campus," Daehn said. "The CSB/SJU campus has been holding in-person classes so we want to keep our student-athletes in class and will do whatever we can for that to happen."
Saint John's will open the 2021 season on Friday, March 26 against its biggest rival: St. Thomas. It will be the first of five games between the Johnnies and Tommies.
"Ultimately, we are just happy to have a chance to practice and compete," Daehn said. "Luckily we have some of the best in-state competition in the MCLA and while we only have three opponents, it is arguably the toughest schedule we have had in my time at Saint John's since 2009."
For the most up-to-date schedule, the MCLA website will be regularly updated with any game changes – including game times – being posted within the next few weeks. Even with the revised schedule, Saint John's will be live-streaming all games so parents, friends, and alumni can follow every minute of Johnnie lacrosse.
