St. John's maintains No. 3 national ranking after action-packed weekend

St. John’s was able to keep its MCLA national ranked third position after playing four games against Division II top-20 teams in three days during the April 8-10 weekend.

The lacrosse heavy weekend had a rough start on Friday, April 8, as the Johnnies suffered their first loss of the 2011 season -- a 10-8 defeat to Davenport University.

Leading the way for St. John’s in the game against the Panthers were attackmen Jake Helmer (freshman, Mahtomedi, Minn.) with two goals and two assists and Alex Fulton (junior, Mahtomedi, Minn.) also contributed two goals.

The close scoring game provided the Johnnies with a high level of competition that will help prepare the team in its hopes for a seventh-straight national tournament appearance.

On Saturday, April 9, the Johnnies played Missouri State University at 10 a.m., ranked No. 12 (MCLA DII), and No. 18 Missouri Baptist University at 3 p.m.

The consistent scoring of St. John’s in each quarter resulted in a 12-6 victory over the Missouri State Bears.

After a close first half against Missouri Baptist, the game was tied 4-4 at halftime.

St. John’s took advantage in the second half with help from Helmer, who finished with four goals and two assists in the 9-7 victory over the Spartans.

On Sunday, April 10, the Johnnies played their fourth and final game of the weekend against Northern Colorado University.

St. John’s emerged victorious 9-4, as six different Johnnies found the score sheet.

With the four tough, out-of-conference games the Johnnies own an 11-1 record.

Through those 12 games, Helmer currently leads the team in scoring with 56 points (22 goals, 24 assists) and sophomore goaltender Michael King owns an impressive .633 save percentage.
